Heroes & Providence

Supernatural forces have helped heroes for hundreds of years. Through studying Joseph Campbell’s monomyth model, I was intrigued by the idea of supernatural aid and guidance that comes to heroes once they find the courage to go on their journeys.

Ancient traditions, from Christianity, mythology, to classic literature, contain stories where the hero goes on an arduous journey and is guided by the supernatural in the form of nature or animals. For example:

1. Moses goes into the desert he encounters an angel in the form of a burning bush.

2. In C.S. Lewis’s Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe our heroes Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy are guided by the regal Lion Aslan.

3. In Greek mythology the goddess Psyche is aided by Zephyr the west wind.

Inspired by these epic narratives, in this series I’ve constructed images to tell my own stories of heroes, their journeys and the role of supernatural aid. The photos to create these have come from my travels in South Africa, Zambia, China, Cambodia, Prague, Thailand, India, Mexico, Denmark, Finland, Norway, California and Arizona.
