Youth in Bloom

“We are such stuff as dreams are made on, and our little life is rounded with a sleep.” - Prospero, The Tempest, William Shakespeare

As a kid, growing up I always loved stories of kid heroes such as Peter Pan, Little Nemo in Slumberland, and Sebastien from the Never Ending Story. But there were never ever Asian or Filipino heroes. As an adult I realized that there weren't many heroes in general from a Asian or Filipino descent, in stories or fine art mediums such as photomontage.

But Doctors, art therapists, and Feng Shui experts agree that images have power to influence development and  shape the way we think. When my son Eli was born, I was so excited! I wanted to give him the best upbringing and role models.

Therefore, I created this fine art series with the belief that by surrounding him with symbolic images, where the hero is from a diverse ethnic background, he would have at least one  diverse child hero to be inspired from.

Influenced by the Little Nemo in Slumberland comic by Winsor McCay, created in 1905, and Peter Pan, created in 1902.  I made these photomontages  dreamlike in nature. And used photos of Eli when he was just 3 months old. Ultimately, I'd like to create a children's fantasy story book using some of these photos. I combined these with travel photos from the Philippines, Camobodia, Mexico, and the United States.
